The New Black

Here is the first piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 debut grade bass syllabus. This is a Classic Rock piece in the style of bands suck as AC/DC and Thin Lizzy. It’s main focus is on crotchets (quarter notes) and minims (half notes), timing and rests. Remember to listen carefully to the drums to keep in time make sure your rests are clean.

For the recording I used my 2004 Fender Precision bass through a Roland Cube 30 Bass amp and Behringer Ultra DI box into my iMac via a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB interface.

Eat Your Greens

Here is the second piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 debut grade bass syllabus. This is a Blues piece in the style of bands from the mid to late 60’s. It’s main focus is on crotchets (quarter notes), minims (half notes) and crossing strings. Remember to try and create a relaxed but solid groove and make sure you mute any open notes that could ring on and make the bass line muddy.

For the recording I used my 2004 Fender Precision bass through a Roland Cube 30 Bass amp and Behringer Ultra DI box into my iMac via a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB interface.

Z

Here is the third piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 debut grade bass syllabus. This is a Hip Hop piece in the vein of Xzibit and Dr. Dre. It’s main focus is on crotchets (quarter notes), timing and rests. Remember to keep your rhythm even and watch out for the flipped quavers.

For the recording I used my 2004 Fender Precision bass through a Roland Cube 30 Bass amp and Behringer Ultra DI box into my iMac via a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB interface.

The Drifter

Here is the fourth piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 debut grade bass syllabus. This is a Country piece in the style of songs by Taylor Swift and Alison Krauss. It’s main focus is on dotted minims (dotted half notes), quavers (eighth notes) and playing evenly. Remember to count carefully so the dotted minims receive their full value and keep the note volume consistent.

For the recording I used my 2004 Fender Precision bass through a Roland Cube 30 Bass amp and Behringer Ultra DI box into my iMac via a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB interface.

Coraline

Here is the fifth piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 debut grade bass syllabus. This is an Indie Pop piece in the style of bands like Oasis and Blur. It’s main focus is on consistency, melodic lines and crossing strings. Remember to make sure you use the same attack for all the crotchet (eighth note) runs and make sure you mute any open notes that could ring on and make the bas line muddy.

For the recording I used my 2004 Fender Precision bass through a Roland Cube 30 Bass amp and Behringer Ultra DI box into my iMac via a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB interface.

Here is the final piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 debut grade bass syllabus. This is a Rock ‘N’ Roll ballad in the style of artists such as Brian Setzer and The Everly Brothers. It’s main focus is on crotchets (quarter notes), minims (half notes) and playing evenly. Remember to try and create a solid bass line and make sure notes are the correct length and same volume.
