Rockschool electric bass grade 2 information and videos 2012-2018


Dr Cocoa

Here is the first piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 grade 2 bass syllabus. This is a blues piece in the style of blues boogie artists like Canned Heat and Status Quo. It’s main focus is on shuffle feel, unison riffs and accidentals. Remember to listen carefully to the guitar for the unison riffs and watch your rhythm on the quavers.

For the recording I used my 2004 Fender Precision bass through a Roland Cube 30 Bass amp and Behringer Ultra DI box into my iMac via a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB interface.

Crawler

Here is the second piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 grade 2 bass syllabus. This is an indie rock piece in the style of bands like The Strokes and The Coral. It’s main focus is on quaver (eighth note) grooves, rests and open strings. Watch your rhythm in this piece and make sure the rests are nice and clean.

For the recording I used my 2004 Fender Precision bass through a Roland Cube 30 Bass amp and Behringer Ultra DI box into my iMac via a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB interface.

Midnight Mist

Here is the third piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 grade 2 bass syllabus. This is a hip hop piece in the style of blues boogie artists like Jay Z and Dr. Dre. It’s main focus is on long notes, consistency and open strings. Remember to keep this piece smooth. Make sure you long notes last their full value.

For the recording I used my 2004 Fender Precision bass through a Roland Cube 30 Bass amp and Behringer Ultra DI box into my iMac via a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB interface.

Don’t Believe Me

Here is the fourth piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 grade 2 bass syllabus. This is a classic rock piece in the style of acts like Thin Lizzy and Deep Purple. It’s main focus is on swung quavers (eighth notes), string crossing and open strings. Remember to watch your open strings. Don’t let them ring on as it will sound muddy! Also watch for the accents and remember to swing!

Bonecrusher

Here is the fifth piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 grade 2 bass syllabus. This is a metal piece in the style of bands like Metallica and Trivium. It’s main focus is on quaver (eighth note) basslines, offbeat rhythms and unison riffs. Remember to keep your quavers nice and even and make sure you play in time with the guitar on the unison riffs.

Danzon

Here is the final piece from the Rockschool 2012-2018 grade 2 bass syllabus. This is a Latin rock piece in the style of artists like Carlos Santana and El Chicano. It’s main focus is on dotted rhythms and Latin grooves. Remember to watch your rhythm and get into the groove!
