Rockschool electric guitar grade 2 information and videos 2012-2018

The grade 2 exam is designed for people who have been playing for approximately 12 to 18 months. The exam lasts for 20 minutes. The pieces last for a maximum of 1 minute 30 seconds. The skills required are:

  • accurate reading of notation including basic syncopation.
  • basic damping techniques.
  • moving between chords and single notes.
  • basic legato/staccato.
  • hammer-ons and pull-offs.

Scales

There are eight scales to play at this grade. All the scales are played at 80bpm with each note on a tick of the metronome (crotchets).

G major scaleC major scaleE natural minor scaleA natural minor scale

G major pentatonic scale C major pentatonic scale

G minor pentatonic scale C minor pentatonic scale

It’s always best to use your scales as a warm up. Especially if you are going to be practicing for a long period of time. It’s just like going to the gym for your fingers! Don’t rush. Play each scale slowly to memorise it and then start playing with a metronome. Start slowly and build your speed up. Remember, you don’t have to play the scales at full speed straight away. As long as you can play them at the right speed for the exam you are fine.

Chords

Power Chords

These are played in a sequence that can be found in the grade book.
