So you want to learn guitar or bass?
That’s fantastic news! I know you probably have lots of questions before getting started, so let’s see if we can answer some of them here.
I teach a wide range of fretted (and fretless) instruments, from beginner to advanced levels. Whether you’d like to learn electric guitar, acoustic guitar, classical guitar, or bass, I’ve got you covered.
I also cover a variety of styles including pop, rock, metal, indie, classical, jazz, funk, and country. My personal favourites are rock, indie, funk, classical, and jazz – but I’m always up for exploring new styles with my students!
Each lesson is interactive and tailored to you. I’ll demonstrate techniques, give feedback on your playing, and answer your questions in real time. You’ll also receive supporting materials such as PDFs (chord charts, TABs, technique sheets) and MP3s (backing tracks, audio examples) – either during the lesson via Zoom, or by email before/after your session.
You’ll also have access to a student area, where all your lesson notes, practice plans, and files are stored, making it easy to track your progress and stay in touch with me between lessons.
Lessons are usually 30 minutes long, which is plenty of time for a warm-up, reviewing last week’s work, learning something new, and planning your practice routine. If you’d prefer longer lessons, that’s absolutely possible too!
Don’t worry – I won’t charge you an arm and a leg (you need both to play anyway!). My rates are competitive and in line with the Musicians’ Union, and you’ll get plenty of value for your money.
A single 30-minute lesson (via Zoom or in my studio) costs £20. New students get their first lesson free, then pay weekly for the next four lessons to make sure you’re happy with my teaching style. After that, lessons are paid in blocks of four weeks in advance.
I also run special offers throughout the year for both new and existing students, so you might just catch a bonus deal along the way!
First things first – you’ll need a guitar or bass (or both if you’re like me!) and a computer or tablet. You can use a phone, but it’s tricky to see everything properly, and being able to see me clearly is pretty important.
You’ll also need to install Zoom (it’s free: www.zoom.us/download) and set up an account if you don’t already have one. Most laptops have a webcam and microphone built in, but if yours doesn’t, you can pick up a USB webcam with a mic fairly cheaply. I’m always happy to give advice if you’re unsure.
A printer can be handy for lesson materials, but it’s not essential.
Once you’re set up, I’ll book you in for your free lesson to check your camera, microphone, and lighting, so I can see and hear you clearly. It’s also a chance to chat about your goals and get you started.
Exams are a great way to measure your progress and give you a real sense of achievement, but they’re never compulsory in my lessons – it’s completely up to you whether you’d like to take them or not.
As an Associate Tutor for Rockschool (RSL Awards), I specialise in preparing students for their graded exams, and I also cover ABRSM and Trinity exam boards. Whether you want to work towards certificates or simply play for fun, I’ll support you in whichever path suits your goals best.
Absolutely – lots of people start out with YouTube lessons, and I even have my own channel where I share performances and Rockschool tips. You can definitely learn a lot from videos, but the problem is knowing whether you’re learning the right way. It’s easy to pick up bad habits without realising, and there’s no one there to correct you.
That’s where individual lessons make all the difference. I can watch you play in real time, help you fix technique issues, and guide you from the very beginning so you build strong foundations. By all means use YouTube as a resource – but if you really want to progress with confidence and skill, personal lessons are the way to go.
If I have missed anything or you just fancy a chat about something then do contact me.
